Umbra is a  noun meaning either 1) a shaded area, 2) the conical part of the shadow of a celestial body excluding all light from the primary source, or 3) the central dark part of a sunspot.

Caroline sat in the umbra under the large sugar maple tree and closed her eyes as leaves fell.
